Introduction
The University of Torino organizes doctoral programs in various disciplines in collaboration with other Institutions. Programs are organised on a yearly basis by each PhD School depending on fundings available.
The doctoral program lasts three or four years and can be partially followed at a university other than the University of Torino with the authorization of the Teaching Committee of the PhD School. Most of the courses are in Italian, unless otherwise specified.
The academic year usually begins on 1st January and terminates on 31st December of the following calendar year.
Admission depends on the positive outcome of a competitive public examination and PhD students may be granted a scholarship or admitted to the PhD without financial supports. Doctoral grants are announced annually and applications are assessed on the basis of documents presented, for applicants resident outside Italy and on the basis of the examinations results for all the others. Each PhD School, in fact, can reserve some positions for students resident abroad, who can be admitted on the basis of their background and qualifications, without undertaking the written and oral examinations to which Italian applicants are subject.
Admission to doctoral programs
Italian and foreign candidates holding a university degree are elegible to participate in the competitive public examination for admission to Research Doctorates, without limits of age or citizenship. The examination consists of one written and one oral examination, for applicants resident in Italy and evaluation of academic titles, for foreign students who apply for reserved positions. Applications will also be accepted from candidates who are not in possession of a degree at the time of application, on condition that they will graduate by the date of the written examination or for the selection by titles an qualifications. In such cases, admission will be confirmed once the degree has been awarded.
Degrees issued by a foreign university must be declared equivalent to the Italian degree.
Should the procedure for confirming the equivalence of the degree not be completed at the time of the application, admission will be conditional upon the positive outcome of that procedure. Foreign candidates holding a foreign qualification that has not been declared equivalent should make explicit request for equivalence when applying, enclosing the “Dichiarazione di valore in loco” of the degree, copies of all certificates translated and asseverated by the Italian Embassy of the country that issued the certificates in order to allow the Teaching Commetee to issue a declaration of Equivalence.
Foreign degrees are evaluated on the basis of the characteristics of the relative national educational system, the type of institution issuing the degree and the level of studies completed.
The following guidelines indicate the minimum level required for applicants who wish to apply for post-graduate study:
Note: a three-year bachelor's degree is not considered sufficient for post-graduate study at the University of Torino. In this case a two-year master's degree following the three-year bachelor's degree is also required.
If the applicant has not yet graduated, academic records can also be presented, they should give detailed information on the content and the quality of your performance, courses taken each year and grades received. The grading scale of the institution and the applicant's rank in class should be noted whenever possible. Degrees must be verified with official copies of diplomas or conferral statements on academic records.
All academic records must be original documents bearing the seal and signature of the Registrar or copies certified by an administrative officer of the institution in question.
If the institution does not issue records in English, sworn translations must be submitted together with the original records. All translations must be literal and complete versions of the original records. All supporting material must be in English/French or in Italian. The University of Torino reserves the right to request additional academic documents.
