What's a PhD?

Doctoral courses at the University of Torino are organized into PhD Schools with the aim to promote research and training activities at the 3rd level of study.

The research doctorate is an academic title awarded at the end of a series of courses and research, admission to which is based on entrance examinations (including written and face-to-face interview by the Committee).

Doctorate courses are open, with no age or citizenship limits, to all those who already hold a 4 to 5 years degree or similar academic title awarded abroad which has been recognized as equivalent to an Italian degree by the Teaching Committee responsible for the entrance examinations.
The number of places on offer each year and details of the entrance examinations are set out in the examination announcement.
The process of earning a doctorate normally takes three or four years and consists of conducting independent research, writing a scientific dissertation including results of the research and defending it in a public sitting in front of the PhD Committee.

Executive Bodies of each School are: the Director and the teachers of the School.
The Director organizes and coordinates activities of each School, while the Teaching Body takes care to the educational part of the PhD course.
With respect to specificities of each scientific area the School can cooperate with national and international public and private bodies, organizing conventions and founding consortiums or setting up specific training curricula.
Through the scientific sectors and in agreement with the Departments involved, the school can organize academic teaching and researching projects in cooperation with other Italian and foreign Universities.
