The Reform of the University system classes the Degree courses in two levels: Laurea (First Cycle Degree courses) and Laurea Magistrale (Second Cycle Degree courses).
The Laurea - First Cycle Degree lasts three years: the entrance requirement is a "Diploma di Scuola Secondaria Superiore" (Secondary School Leaving Qualification) or a qualification obtained abroad and recognized as equivalent.
The Laurea Magistrale - Second Cycle lasts two years: the entrance requirement is a "First Cycle Degree" or a qualification obtained abroad and recognized as equivalent. The "Laurea Specialistica a ciclo unico" - One Long Cycle Degree Courses lasts 5 years (Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmacy, Law, Veterinary Medicine Dentistry and Dental Prosthesis or 6 years (Medicine and Surgery). The students obtain the qualification at the end of the complete cycle.
Three or two years' duration is an approximate time, because the length of all courses is measured in Crediti Formativi Universitari (university educational credits, also known as CFU). The three-year First Cycle Degree is equivalent to 180 credits, the two-year Second Cycle Degree is equivalent to 120 credits.
Further educational courses are offered:
The Credits Systems sets CFU as the unit of measure of the studies that a student needs, having an appropriate initial education, to acquire competences and skills. This system completes, but does not replace, the traditional evaluation system of the student’s cultural background, through exams which still have a grade (30 out of 30).
The Credits System is linked to the university enrolment plans: full-time and part-time. The full-time student submits his/her own Study Plan for each study year, having a number of credits between 37 and 180. The part-time student submits his/her own Study Plan for each study year, having a number of credits between 20 and 36. The enrolment conditions full-time or part-time are chosen year by year, and the tuition fees change according to them.
